The United States is facing a significant threat to its measles elimination status, which has been in place since 2000. According to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the country experienced a 33-year high in measles cases in 2025, with 2,242 confirmed cases nationwide.

The majority of these cases were associated with outbreaks in various regions of the country, and about 93% occurred in unvaccinated people or those with unknown vaccination status. The CDC has also reported three deaths and 245 hospitalizations attributed to the measles outbreaks.

Experts attribute the rise in measles cases to declining vaccination rates in the U.S. and high measles circulation globally. "Measles cases were high in 2025 due to declining vaccination in the U.S. and high measles circulation globally," said Nathan Lo, MD, an assistant professor of medicine at Stanford University.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is scheduled to evaluate U.S. measles data in 2026, which may result in the country losing its measles exemption status. This has already happened in Canada, where ongoing outbreaks led to the loss of their exemption status in November 2025.

**Why are Measles Cases Rising?**

The rapid spread of measles is due to its highly contagious nature. "It's unbelievably contagious. It's the most contagious disease we've ever seen," said Danelle Fisher, MD, a pediatrician at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California.

Measles can spread quickly through respiratory droplets and contact with an infected person. Vaccination is the best way to prevent measles, and it's essential for individuals to get vaccinated to protect themselves and others from this highly contagious disease.
