**Cancer Survival Rates Reach Record High**

Cancer patients are living longer than ever before, thanks to advances in precision treatment, expanded screening, and reduced tobacco use. According to a new report from the American Cancer Society (ACS), 70% of those diagnosed with cancer survive for five or more years compared to 49% in the mid-1970s.

The ACS report highlights three key factors driving this progress: research-driven innovations, expanded screening efforts, and decades of declining tobacco use. These advancements have transformed cancer treatment from a "death sentence" to a manageable chronic disease.

**Research-Driven Innovations**

Breakthroughs in cancer research have led to more targeted and effective treatments. Today's therapies target specific cancer mutations and harness the body's immune system to fight the disease, unlike the "blunt instruments" used in the 1990s.

"Understanding the cancer genome has revolutionized our approach to cancer treatment," said William Dahut, MD, Chief Scientific Officer of the American Cancer Society. "Layering targeted therapies with immunotherapy has had a dramatic effect on survival rates."

**Improved Screening and Early Detection**

Early detection through screening has significantly improved survival rates for breast, cervical, prostate, colorectal, and lung cancers. However, lung cancer screening remains underutilized, with only 19% of eligible Americans being screened.

"The screening numbers are abysmal for a test that can change survival," said Dahut. "We need to address access barriers and educate patients about eligibility criteria."

**Hope for the Future**

While progress has been made, disparities in cancer outcomes persist among certain populations, including Native Americans, Black Americans, and rural communities.

"Our goal is to continue advancing cancer research and treatment, ensuring that all patients have access to life-saving care," said Rebecca Siegel, MPH, Senior Scientific Director of Surveillance Research at the American Cancer Society. "Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by cancer."
