As of recent, the FDA has expanded its approval of Addyi, a medication designed to treat low sex drive in women, to include postmenopausal women up to age 65.

This decision opens up new treatment options for older women who may be experiencing low libido. However, experts emphasize that treating this condition requires a comprehensive approach that addresses the individual's overall health and well-being.

It is essential to note that Addyi should not be taken within two hours of consuming alcohol, as this can lead to potential interactions and adverse effects such as low blood pressure and fainting.

**About Addyi**

Addyi (flibanserin) was originally developed as an antidepressant but was found to have no significant effect on mood. Researchers later discovered its potential in treating low libido and conducted further studies, which led to its approval by the FDA in 2015.

Today, Addyi is the only FDA-approved oral medication for hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in women. It carries a warning about potential side effects when combined with alcohol, and patients are advised to wait at least two hours after drinking before taking the medication.

**Expert Insights**

Cindy Eckert, founder and CEO of Sprout Pharmaceuticals, praised the FDA's decision, calling it a "milestone" in understanding and prioritizing female sexual health. Other women's health experts have also expressed support for the expanded approval.

"This is a significant development for postmenopausal women who may be experiencing low libido," said G. Thomas Ruiz, MD, an OB-GYN at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, CA. "Getting the FDA approval for this patient population could be very important to address their needs."

Mary Jane Minkin, MD, a clinical professor at Yale University, noted that while the studies showed statistical significance of Addyi over placebo, the magnitude of improvement is not overwhelming.
