**New Dietary Guidelines and Alcohol Consumption**

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has released new dietary guidelines that include updated recommendations on alcohol consumption.

The previous guidelines suggested that males consume no more than 2 drinks per day, while females should limit their intake to 1 drink per day. However, the new guidelines have removed these specific thresholds, leaving Americans without a clear understanding of what constitutes moderate drinking.

Experts caution that this lack of clarity may lead to confusion and uncertainty among consumers. "The simple message to 'consume less alcohol for better overall health' is well-intentioned but could be interpreted in different ways," notes Michelle Routhenstein, MS, RD, Preventive Cardiology Dietitian at EntirelyNourished.

The Risks of Alcohol Consumption

Even low levels of alcohol consumption can pose significant health risks. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified over 200 injuries, diseases, and other health conditions associated with drinking alcohol, including liver disease, heart disease, and various types of cancer.

  • Liver disease
  • Heart disease
  • Varieties of cancer, such as breast, colorectal, and liver

"The health effects of drinking alcohol have been well studied and include increased risk of many cancers (including colorectal, liver, and breast cancers), fatty liver disease and cirrhosis, heart disease (including cardiomyopathy and stroke), pancreatitis, and obesity," says Cheng-Han Chen, MD, board certified interventional cardiologist and medical director of the Structural Heart Program at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center in Laguna Hills, CA.

Practical Advice for Responsible Drinking

If you choose to drink alcohol, consider adopting a practical approach by aiming for as many alcohol-free days as possible. This can help minimize your risk and promote overall health and well-being.
