The White House has issued a directive to expedite the reclassification of cannabis under federal law, which may lead to certain benefits for Medicare recipients. This change could also facilitate scientific research on the cannabis plant.

Cannabis refers to a group of plants that includes both marijuana and hemp. Due to its historical associations and concerns about addiction, many prefer using the term "cannabis" when discussing marijuana-related topics.

Medicare recipients may soon see benefits from this reclassification, particularly older adults who are covered under Medicare. Last week, President Trump issued an executive order directing Justice Department officials to speed up the approval process for changing marijuana, a form of cannabis, from a Schedule I drug to a Schedule III drug.

As a Schedule I drug, cannabis is considered a substance with "no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse." In contrast, as a Schedule III drug, it would be classified as a compound with "a moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence."

While the reclassification process may face legal challenges and a lengthy implementation period, one aspect of the proposed changes could provide financial relief for adults 65 years and older who use cannabis-based products.

Cannabis and Older Adults

The executive order that could benefit adults 65 years and older as early as April would allow Medicare recipients to be reimbursed by Medicare for up to $500 per year for qualifying cannabinoid (CBD)-based products. This program may start as early as April 1.

It's essential to note that reimbursements may not be available under Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans, so please check with your specific insurance provider for more information.

The financial relief could be a significant benefit for older adults who are increasingly using cannabis-based products. A recent study found that 14% of people 65 years and older reported using a CBD product in the prior year.

Sherry Yafai, MD, an emergency medicine physician and founder of The RELEAF Institute in Los Angeles, believes that these reimbursements would be highly beneficial for this age group. "Seniors who are able to access affordable cannabis-based products may experience improved health outcomes and quality of life," she said.
