**Recent Research Eases Concerns About Menopause Hormone Therapy and Dementia Risk**According to a new review of over 1 million women's health data, there is no link between menopause hormone therapy (MHT) and an increased risk of dementia.
- A recent meta-analysis found that MHT neither raises nor lowers the risk of dementia in postmenopausal women.
- Experts recommend that decisions about hormone therapy focus on symptom relief and quality of life, rather than fear of cognitive decline.
Menopause Hormone Therapy (MHT), previously known as Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), is used to manage menopause symptoms. For decades, women have been warned about potential serious risks associated with MHT, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and dementia.
However, new evidence suggests that some of these concerns may have been overstated. In November 2022, the FDA removed its black box warning labels on MHT products, citing a return to "evidence-based medicine" and giving women control over their health again.
A major study published in The Lancet Healthy Longevity found no association between MHT and dementia risk. This research is expected to inform upcoming guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) on reducing cognitive decline and dementia risk.
The Complex History of Menopause Hormone Therapy
Menopause hormone therapy has a complex and contentious history, dating back to the 1960s. The practice peaked in the US in the 1990s but declined significantly after the publication of results from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) in 2002.
The WHI study suggested that the risks associated with MHT outweighed its benefits, leading to a significant decline in therapy use. A subsequent subgroup study found an increased risk of dementia and cognitive decline among women taking MHT, effectively cementing this perception and chilling further research on the topic.
